Dodena Trek Detail Itinerary for 11 Days

Day 1: Arrival in Paro | Altitude: 2,300 m

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, begin exploring Paro’s rich cultural heritage with a visit to Rinpung Dzong, a magnificent fortress-monastery showcasing Bhutanese architecture and Buddhist traditions. Continue to the National Museum, home to an impressive collection of artifacts, religious relics, and historical treasures. Later, meet your trekking guide for a detailed trek briefing and equipment check. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing and acclimatizing to the altitude.

After breakfast, drive for approximately 30 minutes to the Tiger’s Nest trailhead. Begin the hike through fragrant pine forests decorated with colorful prayer flags. Reach the scenic cafeteria viewpoint before continuing to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the Paro Valley.

After descending, visit Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress offering spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m) on clear days. End the day with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples.

After breakfast, drive to Shana, the starting point of your trek. The trail follows the beautiful Paro Chhu Valley through forests of blue pine and rhododendron. Enjoy lunch along the route before continuing to Soi Thangthangkha Campsite, where magnificent views of Mount Jomolhari begin to unfold.

Today’s trail gradually climbs through alpine meadows, passing a military checkpoint before leaving the forest behind. The valley widens dramatically, revealing snow-capped peaks, grazing yaks, and traditional yak-herder settlements. Arrive at the beautiful Jangothang Base Camp, situated directly beneath Mount Jomolhari.

Overnight: Campsite

Today is reserved for acclimatization. You may hike to Tshophu Lakes, where stunning reflections of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake create unforgettable scenery. Several optional hiking routes around the valley provide excellent opportunities to acclimatize while enjoying breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.

Overnight: Campsite

Resume your trek by crossing a bridge over the Paro Chhu tributary before steadily climbing toward the day’s pass. Throughout the journey enjoy panoramic views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherim Gang. After lunch, continue along a scenic mountain trail leading to Lingshi Campsite.

Sodhu Camp Bhutan – Scenic Stop on the Jomolhari Trek Route

Begin early for one of the trek’s most challenging yet rewarding days. Cross the spectacular Yale La Pass (4,920 m), which offers incredible panoramic Himalayan views. From the pass, descend through alpine landscapes following the upper reaches of the Wang Chhu River until reaching Shodu Campsite.

Barshong Bhutan – Historic Village and Trekking Stop on Jomolhari Route

Follow the scenic Wang Chhu River through beautiful forests of rhododendron and hemlock, crossing several wooden bridges and passing cascading waterfalls. Reach the ruins of the historic Barshong Dzong, where you may camp, or continue another 1.5 hours to Domshisa Campsite to shorten the following day’s trek.

Dodena Bhutan – Scenic Mountain Valley Near Thimphu

Continue trekking through peaceful forests along the Wang Chhu River via Dolam Kencho. Climb gradually to a mountain meadow before crossing a final small pass and descending to Dodena, north of Thimphu. Your vehicle will be waiting with refreshments before driving approximately 30 minutes to Bhutan’s capital city. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening or a leisurely walk around town.

Thimphu

Spend the day exploring Bhutan’s vibrant capital. Visit the impressive Tashichho Dzong, followed by the Folk Heritage Museum to experience traditional Bhutanese life. Continue to the Takin Preserve Centre, home to Bhutan’s unique national animal. In the evening, browse the lively Craft Bazaar, where you can shop for authentic handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs.

1. How difficult is the Dodena Trek?

The Dodena Trek is considered moderately challenging. It involves daily hikes of 5–9 hours with several mountain passes and gradual ascents, making it suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness.

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is pleasant, the mountain views are clear, and the forests are especially beautiful with blooming rhododendrons in spring.

The highest point of the trek is Yale La Pass at 4,920 metres (16,142 feet), offering spectacular panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range.

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential. If you have good physical fitness and are comfortable walking for several hours each day, you can successfully complete the trek with proper preparation.

The trail passes through rich Himalayan forests where you may spot blue sheep, Himalayan marmots, yaks, Himalayan monals, blood pheasants, and various alpine birds. While sightings of larger wildlife are rare, the region is known for its rich biodiversity.
