Nestled in the remote hills of Trashiyangtse in eastern Bhutan, the Rigsum Goempa Trek offers a peaceful escape far from the usual tourist routes. The trail begins in the quiet village of Dungzam and gradually climbs for about 3–4 hours through serene alpine forests adorned with colorful prayer flags. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with tranquil surroundings and a deep sense of solitude. At approximately 2,900 meters, the 18th-century Rigsum Goempa monastery overlooks the valley with breathtaking panoramic views. Moreover, the monastery is an important pilgrimage site, renowned for its ancient murals and the revered “speaking” Buddha statue. Altogether, this short trek perfectly blends untouched Himalayan scenery, spiritual heritage, and authentic Bhutanese culture, leaving visitors with a lasting sense of peace and inspiration.

Rigsum Goempa Trek Detail Itinerary for 12 Days

Day 1: Arrival in Paro | Altitude: 2,300 m

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, take some time to relax and acclimatize to Bhutan’s fresh mountain air. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore the charming town of Paro or visit nearby cultural attractions before enjoying a traditional Bhutanese dinner.

After breakfast, board a scenic domestic flight from Paro to Bumthang, offering spectacular aerial views of Bhutan’s valleys and Himalayan peaks. Upon arrival, explore Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, known for its ancient monasteries, sacred temples, and peaceful countryside. Overnight in Bumthang.

Today, enjoy a scenic drive from Bumthang to Mongar, passing through beautiful mountain landscapes, dense forests, and traditional Bhutanese villages. The route offers panoramic views and several photo opportunities as you descend into eastern Bhutan. Overnight in Mongar.

After breakfast, continue your journey to the peaceful district of Tashiyangtse. The drive passes through picturesque valleys and lush forests before reaching this charming town, known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional woodcraft. Spend the evening preparing for the upcoming trek.

Today marks the beginning of the Rigsum Goenpa Trek. The trail winds through pristine forests, peaceful countryside, and traditional settlements as you gradually make your way toward the sacred Rigsum Goenpa. Along the route, enjoy the serenity of nature, colorful flora, and beautiful mountain scenery. Overnight at a designated campsite.

Continue trekking through remote forests and rolling hills while experiencing Bhutan’s untouched wilderness. The trail offers excellent opportunities to observe local birdlife, native vegetation, and breathtaking landscapes. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as you continue toward the sacred monastery, camping overnight in nature.

After breakfast, descend from Rigsum Goenpa and trek back to Tashiyangtse. The relatively short hike offers one final opportunity to appreciate the beautiful forests and peaceful landscapes before reaching the town. Enjoy a comfortable evening at your hotel.

Today, drive back to Bumthang through eastern Bhutan’s scenic mountain roads. The journey passes through charming villages, forested valleys, and high mountain passes, offering spectacular views throughout the day. Upon arrival, relax and enjoy your final evening in Bumthang.

Today, embark on one of Bhutan’s most iconic experiences—a hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang). Perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor, this sacred monastery offers breathtaking views and deep spiritual significance. After exploring the monastery, return to Paro for your final overnight stay.
