Gangjula Trek Detail Itinerary for 08 Days

Day 1: Arrival at Paro Airport | Altitude: 2,300 m

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our team with a traditional white khaddar, a symbol of good luck and hospitality in Bhutan. After checking into your hotel, you will receive a detailed briefing about your upcoming Gangjula Trek, including the trekking route, safety guidelines, equipment check, and what to expect during the adventure. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and acclimatizing to Bhutan’s peaceful mountain atmosphere.

Today’s hike serves as an excellent acclimatization walk before heading into the high Himalayas. Trek to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Bhutan’s most famous landmark, perched dramatically on a cliff nearly 900 metres above the Paro Valley. The round-trip hike covers approximately 7 km and takes about 5–6 hours. Along the trail, enjoy beautiful pine forests, fluttering prayer flags, and spectacular valley views. Visit the sacred monastery, soak in its spiritual atmosphere, and return to Paro for a well-deserved rest.

After breakfast, transfer to Paro Airport for an unforgettable helicopter flight to the remote Himalayan village of Laya. The scenic flight takes approximately 25 minutes, offering breathtaking aerial views of Bhutan’s snow-capped mountains, deep valleys, and untouched forests. Upon arrival in Laya, settle into the village and enjoy your first experience of Bhutan’s unique highland culture surrounded by magnificent Himalayan scenery.

Spend the day acclimatizing and exploring the beautiful village of Laya, one of Bhutan’s most isolated settlements. Wander through the traditional stone houses, meet the friendly Layap people known for their distinctive dress and rich cultural traditions, and visit the local school and community. Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, Laya offers an authentic glimpse into life in Bhutan’s high Himalayas while preparing your body for the higher elevations ahead.

Your Gangjula Trek officially begins today. The trail gradually climbs through alpine meadows, yak grazing pastures, and beautiful mountain landscapes as you leave Laya behind. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges before reaching the remote settlement of Woche, traditionally considered the boundary between Laya and the Lunana region. Today’s trek follows one of the most scenic sections of the trail. Climb steadily through forests of juniper, fir, and rhododendron to reach Keche La Pass (4,480 m), where magnificent views of surrounding Himalayan peaks await. Descend towards Lhedi village before continuing alongside one of the main tributaries of the Pho Chhu River. Pass through the small settlement of Choejong and visit its historic dzong before arriving at the wide alpine valley of Thanza, surrounded by towering mountains.

Today’s shorter trek is one of the highlights of the journey as you ascend to the spectacular Gangjula Pass. Although the distance is relatively short, the high altitude makes the climb rewarding. Upon reaching the pass, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Bhutan’s Himalayan peaks, glaciers, and vast alpine landscapes stretching into the distance. During summer, colourful wildflowers blanket the meadows, and lucky trekkers may spot rare Himalayan wildlife. Overnight camp near the pass.

Spend a full day exploring the magnificent surroundings of Gangjula Pass. Take short walks around the high-altitude landscape, admire the dramatic Himalayan vistas, photograph the pristine mountain scenery, and simply enjoy the tranquility of one of Bhutan’s most remote locations. After breakfast, retrace your steps back to Thanza through the same spectacular alpine landscapes. Descending from the high pass provides a different perspective of the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges. Upon reaching Thanza, relax at the campsite and spend the evening exploring the peaceful village.

Begin the return journey through Lunana as you hike back towards Woche. The trail passes through scenic valleys, river crossings, and remote landscapes that few travellers ever experience. Woche remains one of Bhutan’s least-visited settlements, offering an authentic glimpse into life in the high Himalayas.

Descend gradually back to the picturesque village of Laya. After arriving, enjoy a relaxing walk through the village, interact with the friendly local residents, and learn more about the unique traditions and lifestyle of the Layap community. Many younger villagers speak English, making it easy to engage in meaningful conversations.

Following breakfast, board a helicopter for another spectacular flight over Bhutan’s Himalayan landscapes. The journey offers incredible aerial views of Gasa, Lunana, mountain rivers, ancient monasteries, and the majestic Tashichho Dzong before arriving in Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing after your trekking adventure.

Explore Bhutan’s vibrant capital city. Visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (School of Traditional Arts), where students master Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts and crafts. Continue to the Folk Heritage Museum to learn about Bhutanese rural life before visiting the Memorial Chorten, one of the country’s most important religious monuments where locals gather daily for prayers.
