The Tharpaling Thongdrol Festival is a sacred one-day Buddhist festival held at Tharpaling Lhakhang in Chumey Valley, Bumthang. The festival is best known for the unveiling of a giant Thongdrol, a sacred appliqué silk religious image depicting Jowo Jampa (Maitreya Buddha) and Kuenkhen Longchen Rabjam. The main display is preceded by several days of prayer ceremonies known as Moelam Chenmo, performed by the monks of Tharpaling. Unlike many Bhutanese tshechus, the Tharpaling Thongdrol does not feature traditional mask dances, making it a particularly devotional and contemplative festival.
