The Green Lake trek in Sikkim is a thrilling journey for nature lovers. The Green Lake is located at the bottom of Mount Kanchenjunga on the Zemu Glacier, at around 5,000 meters in height. It is a winter wonderland filled with the highest and most majestic Himalayan peaks.
Summer is the best season to undertake this trek since the terrain is already difficult enough without adding the challenges of winter snow to it. However, for those who really want that added level of challenge, the trek trail is also open during the winter months.
The Green Lake trek in Sikkim takes 7 to 9 days to complete. Beginning at Zema, the trek takes one through thickets and over boulders, past colorful rhododendrons and gushing rivers. The days are spent in walking through some of the best sights of Sikkim; it is an intense immersive natural experience and being one with it is truly a blessing. Trekking the route is not easy- the altitude and the rugged terrain make it a challenge for the best of trekkers.

North Sikkim’s Lachen is a popular halt for trekkers exploring this area’s soul. Today, you will travel from Gangtok to Lachen, a small town. You will see many sites on the route, including Tashi View Point, Phodong Monastery, Kabi Longstok, Mangan, and Chungthang, where you will have lunch. You will arrive at Lachen in the evening and stay in a hotel for the night.
5-6 Hours Trek, Zemu River, Challenging Terrains
Today we leave Zema, 20 minutes from Lachen, to begin the real trek. You’ll encounter boulders and rhododendron thickets on the trail to Zemu River as you trek. After you finish the climb through the forest to reach Talem, you can have lunch and adjust to the weather. Take your time to enjoy the area and camp out under the stars.
4-5 Hours Trek, Rhododendrons
Today’s trek will be a fairly easy walk that you can cover within 4 to 5 hours. The trek will be fascinating with more than twenty exotic varieties of colorful rhododendrons; soak yourself in the vibrant colors of nature and reach the Jakthang campsite, where you will spend overnight in tents.
4-5 Hours Trek, Zemu Glacier
Make your way from Jakthang to Yabuk via the rhododendron forests and creeks to begin your day. Zemu Glacier’s snout is where you begin your trek. After walking through several ascents and descents, you will arrive at the Yabuk campsite. You can freshen up and relax at the camp after a pleasant excursion. Overnight stay is permitted.
5-6 Hours Trek, Mt Siniolchu, Mt Simvo
Brace yourself for a difficult trek through rough pebbles and boulders to the Rest Camp. Though the high altitudes make the trek a bit challenging, the spectacular views of peaks such as that of Mt Siniolchu and Simvo make it worth the challenges! Upon reaching the Rest Camp, retire for the day and settle down in the camping tents.
5-6 Hours Trek, Siniolchu, Simvo, Twin Peaks, Nepal Peaks, Kanchenjunga, Lakeside Camping
After today’s breakfast, you will be embarking on the most fascinating part of this trek; trek to the Green Lake. As you will be gaining height, you can expect a few tricky terrains and challenges on the way. Along the entire trek, the astounding views of the Siniolchu, Simvo, Twin Peaks, Nepal Peaks, and Kanchenjunga will keep you enthralled till you reach the Green Lake; overnight stay will be in the plains beside the lake.
Leisure Day at Green Lake
Spend the day gaping at the majestic mountains and lush green meadows, clicking photographs or rejuvenating your tired body. Explore the kaleidoscopic surroundings of the lake and spend the night at the Green Lake camp.
5-6 Hours Trek, Down Trek
With the completion of today’s breakfast, you will be trekking back to Yabuk. Follow the trails that you have traced for the last few days and trek downhill to reach the Yabuk campsite for an overnight stay.
5-6 Hours Trek, Prek Chu River, Trekking Ends Here
Today, descending through the Prek Chu River, you will be arriving in Yuksom, the last leg of this astounding tour. The village is settled by a small community of Tibetan origin and is very popular for flower species. Walk around the village and spend your time. In the evening check into the hotel.
