The trek from Rumtse to Tso Moriri Lake, also known as the Rupshu trek, is one of the most beautiful treks in the whole Himalayan region. During this 7-day trek, you will cross the Changthang region and get to admire the stunning landscapes of the Tibetan plateau. You will discover two high-altitude lakes: Tso Kar Lake where you might spot the majestic black-necked crane found in only Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and some parts of Southeast Asia. Other rare birds are also found in this area and the magnificent Tso Moriri lake which is the end point of the trek.
The trek from Rumtse to Tso Moriri takes you to remote areas where you will not find any villages for days. Therefore, you will need to carry tents and bring food supplies from Leh. If you are lucky, you may come across Changpa nomads who inhabit the region with their yaks and pashmina goats. Before starting the trek, you will need to get a special permit to access this part of Ladakh.
This trek is rated as difficult due to its average altitude always above 4,500m and because it crosses six mountain passes above 5,000m. When you reach Tso Moriri lake on the 7th day, you should spend the night in Korzok and the taxi will take you back from Korzok to Leh on the next day. Indeed, it is better to have some time to relax at the lake before driving back to Leh.

Rumtse is small village located near the Leh –Manali highway just before Taklangla pass, approximately 70kms from Leh . The road to Rumtse has wonderful landscape especially the colourful mountains around Gyavillage.

This day will involve crossing two high passes and it is an experience in itself to sleep at the camp, which is situated at 4200 ascend to Kyamar –la starts after a few minutes of walking as you leave your camp.
Although the descend to the Tsokar lake is gentle but it is a very long way through the valley and the desert. You can have the nice view of salt Lake Tsokar.

After heavy breakfast we shall pack our things and begin our walk towards Nuruchan. Our walk continues towards west side of Tso Kar lake where you might be able to spot black necked cranes and brahmini ducks. Tso Kar is also called “white lake” because of the salt that get deposited on its banks

Today is little harder than the usual leaisure walk as we will be crossing two passes. You will be crossing two passes of Horlam Kongka La (4900 m) and Kyamayuri La (5410 m ) to reach Gyamar village. The highlight of this trek is you come across many nomads people with their yaks, goats, sheeps and horses migrating towards lower region.

After crossing the Kartse La which is about 4000m, the trail descends down towards the Gyamar valley
Being part of the wetland reserve under Ramsar site, it is actual known as Tsomoriri Wetland Conservation Reserve and one cannot pitch any tents or construct anything near the banks of the lake. It is the highest Ramsar site in the world. A large number of flora and fauna is found in the region. This is beautiful place where natural eco system exists. Upon arrival at Tsomoriri we shall camp or check into hotel.
