The Gokyo Lakes trek is a 17-day holiday of which 13 days of the journey are trekking. From Kathmandu, there is a short flight to Lukla, but you can choose to walk in from a lower altitude if you prefer.

Best Season to Trek Gokyo Lake Trek in Nepal:

As with most treks in Nepal, the best times to do it are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). In these months the weather is likely to be clear, and daytime temperatures warm. The Khumbu region, however, is known to be particularly cold and dry, and many trekkers develop the ‘Khumbu cough’ due to the dry dust.

It is usually possible to trek in the summer/monsoon and winter seasons, but greater preparation for difficult conditions is required, and you may not get clear views.

Day 3Fly to Lukla; Trek to Phakding (8,563 feet/ 2,610 m):

Lukla to Phakding trek distance 6.2 kilometers, weather and elevation 2610 meters above sea level. Phakding situated at a lower elevation than Lukla is good for acclimatization and minimizing the risk of altitude sickness. Lukla to Phakding is about 3 hours’ walking distance but some travelers take longer to reach.

Day 04Namche Bazaar (11,290 feet / 3,440 m):

Namche Bazaar is an essential stop on the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek, as well as other treks in the Everest Region. There is no vehicle road access there, making the journey between Kathmandu and Namche Bazaar quite an adventure. Most travelers fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Namche Bazaar from there.

Day 05Namche Bazaar (day-hike to Khumjung)

This village is one of the most beautiful in Khumbu. The Himalayan Trust has a school here, as well as a medical post (for locals and trekkers) in nearby Khunde. This trip is quite short, only about 1-2 hrs. Due to the short trip, this day is almost like acclimatization. It is important to take the day off to allow our bodies to adjust to the rarefied atmosphere before ascending to higher altitudes.

Day 06Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,200 m):

Dole is really a cluster of trekking lodges, rather than an actual village. Snow surrounded the buildings in any bit of shade that was available.

Day 07Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4,470 m):

The route from Dole to Machhermo is fairly straightforward. It is basically a gently climbing traverse that gains a net 1,200 feet; for most people, this is a half day of walking that allows for a little rest and acclimation.

Day 08Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo:

Machhermo to Gokyo distance is 5.7 kilometers. Trekking in the Gokyo valley is considered a customary trek, and that offers trekkers splendid views of the Ngozumpa glacier as well as many mountain peaks. The remote valley is also known for its beautiful turquoise lakes beside the glaciers which are like a moonscape. The most accessible mountains that can be viewed from the valley very clearly and at an altitude of 8000 meters include the Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Mount Everest Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makulu.

The place Gokyo valley has miraculous surroundings and trekkers can feel an immense sense of success reaching the highest village. The Ngozumpa glacier 36 kilometers / 22 miles long originates below the sixth-highest mountain in the world mount Cho Oyu Nepal. Ngozumpa glacier is the largest glacier in Nepal.

Day 09Acclimatization in Gokyo (4,790 m):

Climb Gokyo Ri or visit Gokyo Lakes: Tour Gokyo village and accalmatisation.

Day 10Gokyo village (day-hike to Fifth Lake, 4,956 m):

When visiting the Gokyo region of the Himalayas, one of the top highlights to take part of is the trek to the 4th and 5th Gokyo Lakes.

This day trek will have you going along the Ngozumpa Glacier, taking in views of the surrounding mountains as you reach these beautiful turquoise lakes. Not only that but you also will be able to enjoy one of the best views of Mount Everest in the region.

This guide will go into detail about the Gokyo Lakes trek to the 4th and 5th lakes and help answer any of your questions along the way.

Day 11Trek from Gokyo to Phanga (early morning summit of Gokyo Ri, 5,400 m):

We’ll work our way to Gokyo Lake through the steep slopes of Phangan, which will take around an hour. Thereafter, trekking a few miles away

Day 12Trek to Khumjung

Khumjung Village is located in a glacial valley around the high Khumbu and Everest regions. A few hours’ climb from the famous Namche Bazaar.

Day 13Trek from Khumjung to Namche Bazaar

This short trek will be worth visiting where you will encounter the Sherpa people and their unique culture, and get a chance to be close to these charming mountains.

Day 14Trek from Namche Bazaar to Phakding:

The climb from the suspension bridge to Namche is just under 600 vertical meters and feels tough due to the altitude and takes most trekkers around 2 hours.

Day 15Trek from Phakding to Lukla:

Lukla – Phakding. Hiking 7.8 km Ascent: 305 m Descent: 464 m Max Elevation: 2866 m … We were a bit afraid that it’ll be super cold in Lukla.

Day 16: Lukla to Kathmandu:

Day 16Lukla to Kathmandu:

Take a flight back to Kathmandu. The flight is one of the scariest flights in Nepal but our expert pilots make sure that the journey is comfortable and exciting.
